A Message from Studio Yogi’s Founder Julia Perkins

I happened upon yoga at age fifty after I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis. I was searching for a practice that would still challenge me but not give me cause to worry given my new limitations. Yoga was game changer for me, but I had to travel outside of my South Shore community for classes. “Why,” I thought, “can’t we have a yoga studio right here in the neighborhood?”

 Studio Yogi FAQs

  • We recommend that you stay well hydrated, throughout the day. And avoid any heavy meal 3 hours before class, as a full stomach can make some moves difficult.

  • We suggest that you wear light-weight clothing that can move with you or clothing that has a stretchy material if you perspire a lot.

  • We require that all students take off their shoes when entering the studio. We have courtesy slippers at the front door for you to use.

  • We have locker rooms that you are welcome to use. If you don’t have a lock, one can be provided to you at the reception desk.

  • We do not permit cells phones in the studio room where you will be practicing. Please silence your phone and store in a locker.

  • We encourage you to bring your own yoga mat, towel for your mat and one if you plan to shower, and a large water bottle. If you don’t have a mat, no worries, we have mats that you can rent.

  • We strongly recommend that you arrive at least 10 minutes early before class starts. This provides time for you to check and prepare for your practice. It allows the instructors to start on time, not disrupting class for late-comers. Please know that the the studio door is locked when class begins.

  • There is metered and free parking along the 71st corridor, where Studio Yogi is located. Meter parking is free until 9:00 am on weekdays and free all day on Sundays.

Adinkra are Ghanian visual symbols that encapsulate messages conveying traditional wisdom, philosophical thoughts, ideas, or aspects of life or the environment. There are 121 of these symbols. The one embraced by Studio Yogi is SESA WO SUBAN. It combines two separate adinkra symbols: inside the wheel, which represents rotation or independent movement, is the “morning star,” which can mean “a new start to the day.” When placed together, the two symbols become SESA WO SUBAN, which represents and imparts the courage and willingness to embrace change and transformation.
